Salary sacrifice – or salary packaging – is an Australian Tax
Office (ATO)
approved method of increasing your take-home pay, by lowering your taxable
income.

Type of Salary Sacrificing
Self-education
Package fees payable on some Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) loans, but not the loan itself, as well as tuition fee and textbooks, stationery, trade or academic journals, plus student services and amenities fees.
FIFO
For employees who work in remote areas and fly to a remote site, the cost of the flight can be salary packaged.
Living Expenses
Package the cost of joining the airline lounge on an annual basis and you can save the GST as well as paying out of your pre-tax salary. Plus, if your employer has a group membership, you can get access to bigger discounts.
Personal Electronic Devices
Package the full cost of any personal electronic devices used for work, including mobiles, laptops and tablets.
Meal Entertainment
Employees of private schools and universities can now take advantage of personal
restaurant meals and
entertainment as a fringe benefit. Meal Entertainment refers to salary packaging any sit-down meal
out for 2 or more people, including drinks. The facility hire and catering for entertainment, as
well as the provision of a band or DJ is also regarded as entertainment and can be packaged. Meal
Entertainment is a fringe benefit and is not work-related.

NFP stands for not-for-profit. Generally, private schools and universities operate as NFPs and are classified as RebatableEmployers by the Australian Tax Office. This gives you access to a discount on fringe benefits tax of up to $16,825 of spend peryear, for meal entertainment.
Any employee of a NFP Rebatable Employer qualifies for using the Meal Entertainment benefit. By salary packaging the MealEntertainment, you can save between 10% and 22% of the amount you spend on Meal Entertainment.
If you already salary package other benefits, you may only be able to package actual spend of $2,403 per year; If you don’tpackage other benefits, you can package an additional $14,422 per year.
You do not have to use the lounge for business to package the cost. You can package the cost for Qantas and Virgin in thesame year- there is no limit to the number you can package. You can only salary package your membership, not your familymembers’.
To qualify for this benefit, you must be employed on a full-time or part-time basis, and have your employer’s permission to enrollfor this benefit. You cannot claim adhoc parking expenses or car parking leased in the employer’s name.
You can qualify for the benefit if you live and work at a remote site and are required to return home after your roster, if your flightis part of your rostered travel time, and if your employer has defined the flight departure location to be a transit point for theswing.
You can only package one personal electronic device per year and your employer needs to approve the purchase, usually by way of an application process. There is no limit on price for the device.
Your home must be located in a remote area, in or adjacent to where you work and must be your primary residence. You mustwork in a remote area. It is customary for employers to provide remote area assistance in the area in which you work. Theremote area rent, mortgage interest payments or utility bills must be valid payments to a third party.
The course must be related to your work, should enable you to increase your income and improve your skills and knowledge foryour job. Your employer must give their permission for you to enroll in the course.
